JHSC Refresher Training – Making good business sense

JHSC Refresher Training – Making good business sense

All JHSC members who received certification after the new Ministry of Labour (MOL) training standards came into effect on March 1, 2016 are required to take a certification refresher course every 3 years in order to maintain their status. This course provides a detailed review of Certification Part One & Part Two training. It includes updates to OHS legislation, as well as best practices. It offers content relevant to JHSC members in all industry sectors.

Do you need Refresher Training?

  • If you were certified under the 1996 Certification Standards, you do not require re-certification. Your certification status does not expire and you are considered certified for life. In addition, your certification is portable across workplaces or sectors.

However, Certification Refresher Training is not only for those certified under the current standards. Anyone certified under the 1996 Certification Standards may also take refresher training to update their knowledge. This is a good practice to help committee members keep current with changes to legislation and guidelines.

  • If you were granted certification status under the current standards, you will require refresher training every 3 years to maintain your certification status (you can request a one-time exemption).

Certification is about more than just compliance – it also makes good business sense. When committee members are trained, they’re not only better at identifying hazards and making recommendations for improvements, they’re also better health and safety leaders. That should mean improved productivity and reduced injury and illness. Something employers are seeking to maintain or grow their business.
